This unusual shaped bridge goes under the delightful name of ‘Cherry Eye Bridge’. It got it’s name from the bloodshot eyes of the iron stone workers who used it. As we came out of Flint Mill Lock there were plastic strips acting as a height gauge for Froghall Tunnel and they dragged on our roof and sides. The route to Froghall was reminiscent of the Llangollen Canal with steep woodland on either side of the Churnet Valley. So, we turned and moored just short of the tunnel and walked along into the basin.
Through the very short tunnel we reached a the lovely peaceful basin which is surrounded by beautiful wildflowers. There are several more limekilns nearby and the area was once bustling with much activity. The picture on the right is the wharf above Froghall on the disused Uttoxeter Canal.
A shallow lock descends down to the basin with pontoon moorings for about ten boats. There is a small visitor centre (closed when we visited) and excellent boaters facilities which go mainly unused as very few boats can negotiate through the tunnel. The basin has been renovated using a legacy left by a lady benefactor. It’s just a shame that hardly anyone can can make use of it.
The old working boat ‘Birdswood’ is permanently moored at the end of the canal outside the old Wharf Warehouse which used to be a restaurant, but is now residential. There is a small car park with picnic areas and many walking routes to be enjoyed roundabout.
