Leaving Kintbury under the bridge with the mysterious ‘Railway to Heaven’ up the side of the bridge, we passed the Vicarage and it’s neighbour in it’s beautiful canal side setting.
Wire Mill Lock had the easiest ground paddle gearing that we have encountered on the whole canal system. Manufactured by ‘Intogear’ it had no visible safety ratchet. It wound up and down with ease so smoothly because of the groove in the back keeping it perfectly straight. So, instead of the usual ‘wobbly’ types, why haven’t we got these on every lock I wonder? When we came to Dun Mill Lock we walked over the bridge and had to cross the tail of the lock to other side.
Passing Dun Mill it was easy cruising along to Hungerford where we paused for an approaching boat to pass under the bridge.
